Thousands attend Tel Aviv gay pride parade

June 11, 2010 7:31 P.M. (Updated: June 15, 2010 11:43 A.M.)
Bethlehem - Ma'an/Agencies - Thousands of Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv on Friday to attend its annual gay pride parade.

The event comes a year after two young Israeli citizens were shot dead in an attack on a Tel Aviv gay youth center.

Ayala Katz, the mother of Nir Katz, one of the two victims of the attack, spoke at the parade, which was the first she had attended.

"Today, Nir will not be marching with everyone, but I know that if Nir could see me now, he would be very proud of me," she was quoted as saying in the Hebrew-language daily Yedioth Ahronoth.

"I am here because we must respond to all the shows of homophobia," Katz said. "Even if there are those who will close their eyes so as not to see or will choose to bad mouth, we are here."
