Austrian delegation ignites peace light with Palestinian minister

Nov. 25, 2009 5:25 P.M. (Updated: Nov. 26, 2009 10:29 A.M.)
Bethlehem – Ma’an – An Austrian delegation of 450 Christian pilgrims illuminated the Austrian peace light at the Beit Sahour Catholic Church on Wednesday with Palestinian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khuloud Deibis.

The Austrian pilgrims attend the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem every year to light the peace torch, which is then transferred to the churches of Austria. Because of repairs going on at the Nativity Church ahead of expected Christmas traffic, the celebration this year was held down the hill in Beit Sahour, near the traditional site of Shepherds Fields.

During the visit, Deibis met with the head of the delegation, Austrian Governor Borenger, and Austrian representative to the Palestinian Authority, Oscar Westneger, to discuss the state of tourism in the occupied Palestinian territories.
