Palestinian Water Authority pressed Israel to ship water purification chemicals to Gaza

Nov. 27, 2008 9:44 P.M. (Updated: Nov. 27, 2008 9:44 P.M.)
Ramallah- Ma'an - The Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) said on Thursday that it succeeded in pressuring Israel to allow chemicals used to purify water into the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The deputy director of the PWA, Rebhi Ash-Sheikh, said Israel had blocked delivery of 100 cubic meters of Chlorine and dozens of tons of acids used to purify water for over a year. He said the authority was concerned that shortages of these chemicals would threaten the health of Gaza residents.

The PWA pressed Israel to allow the shipment in correspondence over several months. The director of the PWA, Shadad Al-A'ttili raised the issue during a meeting with his Israeli counterpart at a Jerusalem hotel on Wednesday.

The PWA received permission on Thursday to ship the chemicals. A first shipment of 25 cubic meters of chlorine was to be allowed Thursday, with the rest being shipped over the coming two days.

The PWA intervened in its role as the sponsor and overseer of the water network in Gaza, and as the parent organization of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility in Gaza.

The PWA is one of a few Palestinian Authority institutions in Gaza that still reports directly to the president's office in Ramallah, even after the Hamas takeover of Gaza in 2007.
