PLC member: Economic blockade will spark Gaza revolt

Nov. 22, 2008 2:25 P.M. (Updated: Nov. 22, 2008 2:25 P.M.)
Gaza - Ma'an - If the Israeli economic blockade on the Gaza Strip continues much longer, Palestinians may "flood toward crossing points" into Egypt and Israel, warned Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC)-member Jamal Al-Khudari

"A flood toward the crossing points is imminent," Al-Khudari declared at a news conference in Gaza City on Saturday.

"The economic situation has deteriorated to an unbearable degree," Al-Khudari insisted.

"The Gaza Strip is operating under unprecedented and dire economic conditions; all aspects of life are paralyzed," he added.

140,000 workers in the Gaza Strip are now unemployed due to the "crippling siege," while nearly 4,000 factories and workshops have shut their doors, the PLC member claimed. He also estimated the ongoing siege's total effect on the Gazan economy at around US $750 million since it began.

Al-Khudari called on Amr Moussa, the secretary-general of the Arab League, to visit the Gaza Strip and "see firsthand the suffering of its population." He also demanded that Arab countries' foreign ministers prioritize the Gaza crisis at an upcoming meeting in Cairo.

Al-Khudari is a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and the head of the Popular Committee Against the Siege on Gaza.
