UN official calls Israeli siege on Gaza 'the absence of humanity'

Oct. 16, 2008 2:47 P.M. (Updated: Oct. 16, 2008 2:47 P.M.)
Gaza - Ma'an - The head of United Nations relief operations in the Gaza Strip called on Israel to immediately lift the siege imposed on the 1.5 million Palestinians living there, according to a statement.

John Jing spoke at the opening of a women's exhibit for village products, where he said lifting the siege is the only way to "enable [Palestinians] to live in dignity."

"The world supports the Palestinian people at their time of suffering," he said. "Most importantly, we must restore human dignity in a situation where dignified life is lost."

He described the situation in the Gaza Strip as a "political collapse, the absence of humanity."

"We are waiting for the politicians to set the policies and outcome that will guarantee human rights, but until then, life shall go on here," he said.
