Hamas leader denounces Israel for blocking delegation to Cairo

Oct. 9, 2008 9:56 P.M. (Updated: Oct. 9, 2008 9:56 P.M.)
Gaza - Ma'an - Israel prevented a Hamas delegation from traveling to Cairo to take part in the national dialogue taking place there, a leader in the movement said Thursday.

Jamal Abu Al-Haija denounced Israel's decision, but insisted that the Hamas envoy would "make every possible effort" to contact its affiliates at the conference.

Al-Haija also claimed that the decision "affirmed the Israeli and American objections to any effort of reconciliation" among the Palestinian factions.

Israel sentenced Al-Haija to multiple life terms in prison for leading the Al-Qassam brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, in the northern West Bank city of Jenin.
