Huwwara checkpoint closed following alleged bomb threat

Oct. 5, 2008 11:28 A.M. (Updated: Oct. 5, 2008 11:28 A.M.)
Nablus - Ma'an - Israeli forces on Sunday closed the Huwwara checkpoint on the main road south of Nablus preventing Palestinians from leaving or entering the major West Bank city.

Eyewitnesses told Ma'an that Israeli soldiers manning the checkpoint arrested a young Palestinian man carrying a bag on his way out of Nablus. The soldiers then immediately announced the checkpoint was closed. They claimed that the man was carrying a bomb.

The witnesses added that Israeli soldiers fired into the air to force commuters to evacuate the area. No casualties have been reported.

The closure of the checkpoint severs the main link between the nothern West Bank and points to the south, inclusing the administrative center in Ramallah, as well as Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Hebron.
