Israeli soldiers arrest 5 members of the Palestinian public intelligence unit

Sept. 5, 2008 10:27 A.M. (Updated: Sept. 5, 2008 10:27 A.M.)
Nablus - Ma'an - Five Palestinian public intelligence workers were arrested by Israeli forces on Wednesday, for working in areas classified as "B," Palestinian security sources told Ma'an on Thursday.

Area "B" is an area designation from the 1993 Oslo agreements that has the West Bank, and formerly Gaza, divided into areas of control. Area "B" has Palestinian civilian authority, but security for the area is under Israeli control.

According to Ma'an's sources, Israeli soldiers stopped a Palestinian car near the Huwwara checkpoint outside Nablus. Travelling in the car were five members of the Palestinian public intelligence, who were returning to Ramallah after arresting a long-time suspect.

When they were stopped at the checkpoint and searched, the Israeli soldiers confiscated government-issue weapons, ammunition and communication equipments.

Israeli soldiers proceeded to arrest the five men, and took them to the military facilities near the Huwwara checkpoint.

The men were released a short time later, after an intervention by high-level Palestinian officials.
