Israel closes Gaza crossings in response to reported projectile

Aug. 26, 2008 9:55 A.M. (Updated: Aug. 26, 2008 9:55 A.M.)
Bethlehem - Ma'an - Israel closed its border crossings with the Gaza Strip on Tuesday in response to a homemade projectile fired from Gaza landed in Israel on Monday night.

Israeli radio reported that Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Deupty Defense Minister Matan Vilnai held a meeting following the report of the homemade rocket, and decided to order the borders sealed.

The homemade rocket reportedly landed in the Negev desert without causing casualties or material damage. No Palestinian group claimed responsibility for the apparent truce-violating attack.

Israel allowed a slight increase in shipments of essential goods into the Gaza Strip after a ceasefire began on 19 June. Palestinian fighters have all but stopped the barrages of homemade rockets, although occasional projectiles have been reported.

The Gaza Strip's 1.5 million inhabitents have been trapped inside since June 2007 when Israel began a crippling blockade of the tiny territory.
