Yousif: If Gaza seige continues, to hell with the truce

July 17, 2008 2:29 P.M. (Updated: July 17, 2008 2:29 P.M.)
Bethlehem - Ma'an - Dr Ahmed Yousif, the political advisor to Ismael Haniyeh, the prime minister of the de facto government in the Gaza Strip, warned on Wednesday that if Israel continued not meet all of the conditions of the truce, Hamas would return to violent means.

Yousif's statement came during a televised interview with Ma'an News Agency on its program "the difficult questions." He pointed out that the siege of the Gaza strip, being maintained by Israeli forces, constituted a breach of the truce. He went on to make it clear that the Gazans would not put up with the Israeli violations of the cease-fire indefinitely, "if the siege is not lifted and the crossings are not opened, then to hell with the truce," he said.

Yousif is considered to hold considerable political sway with the de facto government in Gaza. This statement will be seen as a further heightening of the tensions around the already fragile truce.
