Abbas to visit Jordan, Russia and US in push for Gaza ceasefire

April 14, 2008 9:47 A.M. (Updated: April 14, 2008 9:47 A.M.)
Bethlehem - Ma'an - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will begin a tour of Jordan, Russia, and the United States on Monday. In the US, Abbas is scheduled to meet US President George W. Bush.

The trip, Abbas' office says, is aimed at drumming up international support for a ceasefire between Israel and armed Palestinian groups in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007. Abbas then fired a Hamas-Fatah unity government and appointed a caretaker cabinet that holds power in the West Bank. Abbas resumed formal peace negotiations with Israel last November.
