Hamas preparing response to expected Israeli attack in Gaza

March 14, 2008 11:03 A.M. (Updated: March 14, 2008 11:03 A.M.)
Gaza - Ma'an - Hamas' military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, is on alert in preparation for renewed Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip, spokesperson Abu Obeida said on Friday morning.

Abu Obeida said that continued flights of Israeli surveillance planes and helicopter gunships over Gaza, bellicose rhetoric from the Israeli leadership, and Israeli attacks in the West Bank all point to an imminent Israeli operation in the Strip.

"The occupation will not be rescued from our shelling in the West Bank," Abu Obeida said, saying that any new Israeli attack in Gaza will be met with a violent response.

Abu Obeida added that the occupation is attempting to force any attempt at a ceasefire to fail. He cited Wednesday's assassination of for Palestinian fighters in Bethlehem as evidence that Israel does not want calm in the West Bank or Gaza Strip.

Israeli and Palestinian negotiators, including representatives of Hamas were said to be on the verge of formalizing a ceasefire on Wednesday when Israeli special forces shot and killed four off-duty Palestinian fighters in the street in Bethlehem on Wednesday night, ending several days of relative calm.

He called ongoing Palestinian-Israeli negotiations "frivolous," and a denial of the suffering of the Palestinian people in light of this situation.

Abu Obeida added, "We will respond to the crimes of the occupation in the appropriate time and place."
