JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli police forces removed locks and chains off the al-Rahma Gate (Gate of Mercy), one of the Al-Aqsa Mosque gates, on Tuesday, 24 hours after sealing it.

Sheikh Wassef al-Bakri said that the Israeli police removed the locks and chains they had installed.

Palestinian activists and youths protested the seal off, on Monday, and broke the chains to reopen the gate. However, Israeli forces resealed the gate afterwards.

Sheikh al-Bakri added that intensive calls were made by the Jordanian government and its Islamic Endowment department and the Islamic Endowment of Jerusalem to solve the issue.

Later Tuesday, dozens of activists, alongside the department, repaired the gate.

Israeli forces assaulted Palestinian worshipers and students of Sharia school, and detained and assaulted five Palestinians, including a woman, after a group of Palestinian youths were able to break the lock and open the gate for worshipers

The al-Rahma Gate is a big building that lays to the east of the Al-Aqsa, the Israeli authorities sealed the building in 2003 as it was the headquarters of the Islamic Heritage Committee; Israel had said at the time that the building was being used for political activities. In 2017, an Israeli court ordered that the building be closed until a further notice.
