Israel extends remand of Saleh, Assem al-Barghouthi's mother

Feb. 7, 2019 12:01 P.M. (Updated: Feb. 7, 2019 4:07 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- The Israeli military court of Ofer extended, on Wednesday, the detention of Suheir al-Barghouthi, 62, whose husband and three sons are currently held in Israeli prisons while her fourth son was shot and killed by Israeli forces, in October.

The Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS) said, in a statement, that the Ofer court remanded al-Barghouthi for 72 hours.

A PPS lawyer, Munther Abu Rahmeh, said that the court suspended a previous order to release al-Barghouthi on the condition of paying a 6000 shekels ($1600) bail, following an objection by the Israeli military prosecutor, who had requested keeping al-Barghouthi in prison awaiting an appeal to the court ruling.

The court allowed the prosecutor 72 hours present an indictment list against al-Barghouthi following the prosecutor's request for six days.

Al-Barghouti was detained from her home in the Kobar village, north of the central occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, on Tuesday.

Israel accuses al-Barghouthi's son Assem of carrying out an attack killing two Israeli soldiers near Ramallah on December 13, one day after his brother, Saleh, was reportedly shot and killed by Israeli soldiers north of Ramallah.
