Ceasefire takes effect after Israel targets Gaza cultural center

Aug. 10, 2018 10:52 A.M. (Updated: Aug. 11, 2018 11:17 A.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Palestinian factions in the besieged Gaza Strip has went into effect since Thursday midnight and is still ongoing through Friday.

Israel had denied reaching a ceasefire agreement after Thursday midnight. However, it has not hit any targets since.

The Egypt-mediated ceasefire comes after the Israeli army had targeted over 150 sites in the Gaza Strip and more than 200 rockets fired from the Gaza Strip at southern Israel since Wednesday morning.

Eighteen Palestinians had sustained different wounds during Israeli airstrikes that targeted a cultural center in western Gaza City on Thursday evening.

Spokesperson of the Gaza Ministry of Health, Ashraf al-Qidra, confirmed that the 18 injuries were transferred to the al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza for treatment.

A Ma'an reporter said that Israeli war planes targeted and destroyed Said al-Mishal Cultural Center in western al-Shate refugee camp of Gaza City.

The Israeli army said in a statement that the airstrikes come in response to rockets fired from Gaza hitting Beersheba in southern Israel.

During Wednesday dawn Israel airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, three Palestinians were killed, including a 9-month pregnant mother and her toddler, while more than 40 others were injured.
