Palestinian fighter in Gaza injured by Israeli artillery shell, DFLP says

Feb. 13, 2017 12:04 P.M. (Updated: Feb. 13, 2017 10:02 P.M.)
GAZA (Ma’an) -- The National Resistance Brigades, the military wing of the leftist Palestinian faction the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), said that one of their fighters was injured Sunday evening by shrapnel from an artillery shell fired by the Israeli army inside the besieged Gaza Strip.

The brigades said in statement that the Israeli army shelled the eastern border area of the central Gaza Strip where the fighter was carrying out a "mission," causing him to suffer from moderate injuries.

The statement went on to say that "the brigades will continue resistance and escalation against the Israeli occupation until the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."

Israeli army incursions inside the besieged Palestinian territory have long been a near-daily occurrence, and often go unreported. On two separate occasions since Sunday evening, Israeli naval boats opened fire at Palestinian fishing boats off the coast of the small coast enclave, with no injuries reported in either case.

In the wake of multiple airstrikes launched by the Israeli army inside the Gaza Strip last week, the Gaza-based al-Mezan Center for Human Rights expressed concern that Israel could be leading up to a wide-scale military offensive, saying the escalation was reminiscent of incidents that lead up to Israel’s major military assaults on Gaza like the so-called Operation Protective Edge in 2014.
