52 Palestinians injured during clashes with Israeli forces near al-Quds University

Oct. 8, 2016 9:03 P.M. (Updated: Oct. 9, 2016 9:30 P.M.)
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces injured more than 50 Palestinians during clashes Sunday evening outside al-Quds University in the village of Abu Dis in the occupied West Bank district of Jerusalem.

The ambulance service of the Palestinian Red Crescent told Ma'an that their medics treated 52 people who were either hit by rubber-coated steel bullets or suffered from severe tear gas inhalation.

One victim was evacuated to the hospital after sustaining a fracture in the hand from a rubber-coated bullet.

Al-Quds University spokesman Muhammad Abu al-Zeit told Ma'an that although the clashes took place outside the campus, some tear gas canisters and rubber-coated bullets fired by Israeli forces landed inside the university grounds.

An Israeli army spokesperson said they were looking into reports.

Israeli police and soldiers have come under heavy criticism over the past year by rights groups for excessive use of force against Palestinians -- against youth and children in particular -- who did not pose an immediate threat or who could have been detained through non-violent means.

According to UN documentation, Israeli forces have injured a biweekly average of 74 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since the beginning of the year, recording a total of 2,679 injuries over the same period.

According to Ma’an documentation, 62 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces during clashes, police and/or army raids in the period of time between Oct. 1, 2015, and Sept. 30, 2016, which has seen a seemingly endless wave of unrest heavily concentrated in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Most recently, a 15-year-old boy was killed during clashes east of al-Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, after Israeli forces shot a flare directly at him, hitting him in the head and setting him on fire.

Human rights NGOs B'Tselem and Defense for Children International - Palestine (DCIP) both recently released reports revealing that the boy, Abd al-Rahman al-Dabbagh, did not pose a threat when an Israeli soldier shot and killed him from the Israeli side of the so-called "buffer zone" along the border with the blocked Palestinian territory.

The Israeli army has denied responsibility for his death, claiming that only tear gas was fired during the clashes, contradicting a number of eyewitness reports.
