Israeli forces detain 16 Palestinians in overnight raids

July 10, 2016 4:58 P.M. (Updated: July 10, 2016 7:10 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces raided Palestinian towns and refugee camps overnight Saturday and at predawn hours Sunday in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, detaining at least 16 Palestinians, Israeli and Palestinian sources said.

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said in a statement that Israeli forces detained three Palestinian teenagers and a young man in East Jerusalem. The organization identified them as Anas Dirbas, 16, Ahmad Othman Rizq, 13, Muhammad Abu al-Hawa, and Shadi Uweisat, 20.

PPS added that Muhammad Zahran and his brother Ibrahim were detained in the village of Biddu in the West Bank district of Jerusalem.

In the southern West Bank, PPS reported three detentions in the Hebron district, identified as Shadi Raed Elayyan from al-Samu, Shadi al-Masri from Tarqumiya, and Mahmoud Ahmad Mutawi from Hebron city.

The detentions in the Hebron area come amid a wide-scale military closure of the most populated Palestinian district since the beginning of the month, with the village of Sair being completely sealed overnight leading to clashes in which five Palestinians were wounded. The village was blockaded in response to a shooting attack that left one Israeli injured late Saturday night, amid an Israeli military manhunt for the gunman.

Two other Palestinians were detained in the Bethlehem district, identified as Shadi Raafat Asaad, 20, and Raafat Riyad Malash, 20.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an they had records of eight Palestinians being detained overnight, including one in the city of Hebron, one southwest of the city of Bethlehem, and one in the Aida refugee camp near Bethlehem.

In the northern West Bank district of Qalqiliya, Israeli forces detained Salih Hijazi Shbeita and Ahmad Abdullah Omran, according to PPS.

The Israeli army said three Palestinians were detained in the Qalqiliya district village of Azzun.

Meanwhile, PPS reported that Israeli forces detained Muhammad Khalid Luici, 27, in the Tulkarem refugee camp.

The army cited one detention in Tulkarem, and another south of Tulkarem.

According to prisoners’ rights group Addameer, 7,000 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons as of May, including 414 minors. The organization estimates that 40 percent of Palestinian men have been detained by Israel at some point in their lives.

According to UN data, Israeli forces have conducted an average of 88 raids in the West Bank each week in 2016.
