BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces shot and wounded an 18-year-old Palestinian youth on Monday morning after he allegedly attempted to stab an Israeli soldier at a checkpoint southwest of Jenin.

An Israeli army spokesperson said that the Palestinian "armed with a knife attempted to stab a soldier during a security check" at a checkpoint near the illegal Israeli settlement of Hermesh.

She said that Israeli forces responded by opening fire on the Palestinian and "thwarted the attack."

The Palestinian was treated on site and later evacuated by ambulance to Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera in Israel, she said.

The Palestinian liaison department later identified the Palestinian as 18-year-old Zayd Mahir al-Ashqar from the Tulkarem village of Sayda.

They said he had been shot in his abdomen. His condition was not clear, and a spokesperson for the medical center could noy be reached for comment.

Nearly 150 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in violence that has shaken the occupied Palestinian territory since the beginning of October.

While Israel had alleged many of those were attempting to attack Israelis when they were shot, Palestinians and rights groups have disputed Israel's version of events in a number of cases.

The attacks that have taken place have claimed the lives of more than 20 Israelis.

Both local and international rights groups have repeatedly criticized the Israeli army for its excessive use of force and for killing and wounding Palestinians who did not pose an imminent threat.
