6 Palestinians hurt in clashes with Israeli forces in Silwan

Sept. 7, 2015 12:33 P.M. (Updated: Sept. 7, 2015 5:25 P.M.)
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Six Palestinians, including a young woman, were injured Sunday evening in clashes with Israeli troops in the Ras al-Amud neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem, a local monitoring group said.

The Wadi Hilweh Information Center in Silwan said in a statement that tensions were raised in the neighborhood after Israeli forces set up a military checkpoint that inspected passing Palestinian vehicles "in a provocative manner."

A heated argument broke out with a Palestinian driver who Israeli forces accused of driving without a license, the information center said.

It said that afterwards, a Palestinian identified as Zaki al-Razim, 34 was hit by an Israeli police vehicle while he was crossing the road, causing clashes to break out.

Al-Razim told the Wadi Hilweh Information Center that "an Israeli police vehicle dashed swiftly and hit me." He said that he fell to the ground before two Israeli officers "attacked" him and dragged him away.

Dozens of local youths clashed with Israeli soldiers and police officers, the information center said.

It said that Israeli forces fired tear gas and stun grenades indiscriminately at Palestinians, causing at least five to suffer excessive tear gas inhalation.

A young woman, identified as Jihan Taha, was also hit by shrapnel from a stun grenade while she was walking to a nearby medical center, the information center said.

Israeli forces reportedly detained a young man identified as Jihad Zaghal.

Al-Razim was later taken to al-Maqasid Hospital in Mount of Olives for treatment, where medics told him he had bruises on the legs, back and pelvis.

The information center added that Israeli police arrived at the hospital and questioned al-Razim.

An Israeli police spokesman could not be reached for comment.

Tension has been high in Silwan, located next to Ras al-Amud, in recent weeks following the take-over by Jewish settlers of two buildings in the East Jerusalem neighborhood.

The PLO accuses the Israeli government of providing "settlement organizations with political, legal and procedural support to expand illegal settlements throughout East Jerusalem, especially Silwan."

Israel captured East Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognized by the international community. Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state.
