RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israel's Ofer military court on Monday found a Palestinian suspect innocent of premeditated murder in a high-profile incident dating back to the Second Intifada in 2000, a lawyer said.

Iyad Mahamid, a lawyer from the Palestinian Prisoner's Society, said Marwan Maadi was accused of taking part in the mob killing of two Israeli reservists in 2000 after they had accidentally wandered into Ramallah.

Maadi was detained in 2012 and accused of assaulting one of the soldiers during the killing, Mahamid said.

The court ruled against the prosecutions' charge of murder, but found the suspect guilty of assault.

At least five Palestinians were arrested and sentenced following the killing of the two Israeli reservists, which made international headlines due to the grisly nature of the incident.

The two Israeli soldiers were on their way to a base in the occupied West Bank but made a wrong turn and got lost in Ramallah.

They were then taken to a police station, where a crowd of hundreds broke in and beat them to death before throwing their bodies out of a window.
