Over 200,000 Palestinian laborers unemployed in Gaza

Sept. 4, 2014 2:26 P.M. (Updated: Sept. 11, 2014 10:07 A.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Over 200,000 Palestinian laborers in Gaza are unemployed, the head of the Palestinian Labor Union said Thursday, up 30,000 since Israel's offensive on the besieged enclave.

Sami al-Amsi said that 170,000 laborers were unemployed before the conflict, but that number has increased significantly due to the destruction of factories and companies during Israel's military assault.

Over 134 factories were destroyed in the Israeli offensive, with reported losses of at least $70 million in the industrial sector.

The ongoing Israeli blockade has also severely limited the productivity of the industrial sector since it was imposed eight years ago, forcing factories to close or fire workers to remain in operation
