Israel detains brother of former hunger striker Samer Issawi

March 13, 2014 11:06 A.M. (Updated: March 15, 2014 9:42 A.M.)
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained the brother of former hunger striker Samer Issawi overnight Wednesday, locals said.

Witnesses said Israeli forces raided the East Jerusalem neighborhood of al-Isawiya at around 2 a.m. and detained Medhat al-Issawi.

Last Thursday, Israeli forces detained Issawi's sister Shireen, who is a prominent lawyer, and his brother Shadi. The two are expected to appear in an Israeli court on Thursday.

Issawi was released from Israeli jail in December as part of an agreement in which he ended a 266-day hunger strike, during which time he became an international cause célèbre who focused attention on the plight of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.

Issawi's hunger strike was one of the longest in history, and brought him close to death.
