Egypt orders crossing open 'immediately'

June 1, 2010 2:42 P.M. (Updated: June 2, 2010 11:25 A.M.)
Al-Arish – Ma'an – The crossing between Gaza and Egypt was ordered immediately open on Tuesday by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak,

security sources told Ma'an.

Rafah, the sole crossing into Egypt, will be open in both directions to allow the transit of patients, students, and foreign passport holders for three days, the source said.

The opening came reportedly in response to the death of at least 10 activists by Israeli forces as they stormed an aid convoy destined for Gaza, loaded with humanitarian and medical aid.

The crossing was last opened two weeks prior after an extended closure.

Israel maintains full control of Gaza's borders, not only barring the entry of goods but the regular passage of Palestinians in both directions.
