Israel to increase number passengers to cross Allenby Bridge on Friday and Saturday

July 17, 2008 1:15 P.M. (Updated: July 17, 2008 1:15 P.M.)
Nablus- Ma'an - Israeli authorities have announced that they are going to permit 1400 passengers to cross the Al-Karamah/Allenby Bridge, the main crossing point between Jordan and the West Bank on Friday and Saturday, an increase in the normal levels allowed to pass.

Palestinian police said in a press release that the Israeli announcement was irresponsible and would result in an influx of travellers trying to get across the bridge over the weekend. They expressed concerns that there will be too many people attempting to stay over in Jericho, the traditional resting place for travellers to and from Jordan.

Palestinian police called on people not to travel on these two days unless the journey is urgent.
